Extension of Elementary School, Dobřichovice

study 2008

client: The Town of Dobřichovice

The goal of the project was extension of the existing school and an alteration of the present school systems of use. The main entrance is moved from a position by a busy crossroad at the north west corner to a quieter and safer section of the square that will arise between the new school building and the existing family houses. The original entrance will then be operational, especially in the afternoon hours, when the historical building may be used for extracurricural education. By its scale and differentiation, the new space reacts not only to the austere school building from the period between the two wars but also to the original character of the city housing. By its calm north-faced facade revived by colour cloth sunblinds it turns to street.  The southern section facade forms a cosy pedestrian square with trees and a playarea. The building benefits from a pair of pent roofs sloping in the same direction, with a lowered flat part covered by extensive maintanence-free plants. Both buildings, old and new, will be connected by joined corridors on all floor levels. In addition to the entrance hall, cloak-rooms and the hygiene facilities, the new part of the school houses ten new classrooms, four offices for teachers, and other rest and common areas.
